2nd school forfeits football game vs. Hope; ‘Maybe we’re not reading same Bible’ – Chicago Tribune

For the second time this month, a Catholic high school from outside of the city forfeited a football game rather than play at Chicago Hope Academy’s West Side field, citing safety concerns.

The decision disappointed Hope Academy school leaders and students, who were planning a “senior night” that would have coincided with the football game, and who said they felt that characterizing the area as unsafe wasn’t fair. The school organized a touch football game instead Friday between teachers and students.

Hope Academy was supposed to play Bishop McNamara Friday night, but the Catholic school in Kankakee declined to play the scheduled game at Altgeld Park in the East Garfield Park neighborhood.

Hope Academy’s game against Providence Catholic on Sept. 29 was interrupted by gunfire when someone in a vehicle shot and wounded another motorist on West Harrison Street, just south of the park.
