Kohl’s Black Friday Ad.

I know, I know, Halloween hasn’t happened yet. And yet Black Friday creeps up on us already as the whole of the retail world does its best to gear up for the biggest shopping day of the American calendar, and we’re already starting to see some retail leaks. If this initial Kohl’s ad is any indication, it’s going to be an excellent year for picking up a current-gen video game console. We just got a leaked ad via bestblackfriday.com that has two excellent deals, one for the Xbox One S and one for the PlayStation 4. The Xbox One S comes in at 189.99, with $45 in Kohl’s cash back for a final price $144.99, and the PS4 comes in at $199.99 with $60 in Kohl’s cash for a final price of $139.99. If you don’t yet have a current-gen console but have been curious about grabbing one, these are some good prices.

There’s also a Halo Wars 2 Xbox One S bundle with an extra controller for $329.99. $90 in Kohl’s cash brings this to a total of $239.99.

A note on bundle pricing: this will always involve a degree of fuzzy logic, because oftentimes these things only really count as a discount if you want all the things in a bundle, or would have purchased them separately otherwise. In the case of gift certificates at places like Kohls, Walmart, Target or other generalist retailers, however, I count it as a straight discount. Kohl’s cash might not be quite as powerful as, say its Wal-Mart equivalent, but they sell enough stuff there that you’ll almost definitely be able to find something you need to buy anyways. For that reason, I’m treating Kohl’s cash as American dollars.

And another disclaimer: this is not quite as cheap as it appears, or more accurately, other Xbox One S or PS4 bundles are not as expensive as they appear. Neither of these consoles comes with a game, which is pretty bog standard in the world of game hardware these days. So expect to spend some extra cash on something to play, though now that these machines have been out for a few years you can get plenty of excellent titles for under $15, with many more sure to come on Black Friday itself. So expect the final price you pay for this whole business to be higher, but not too much higher if you don’t want it to be.

I’ll be interested to see how Black Friday console sales go. The Nintendo Switch is the hot ticket to be sure, but it’s highly unlikely to see such aggressive discounting in its first year if it sees discounts at all. Low prices out of PS4 and Xbox One could make for sizeable sales on these machines too, and it might be enough to influence the decision of people choosing between on the three major consoles. The Switch is likely to continue selling out regardless, but I’ll predict a good year for Xbox One and PS4, too.
