Pay up until 2023, German EU chief tells UK – Telegraph.co.uk

It comes after negotiations with Brussels ended in deadlock last week with the EU refusing to accept that trade negotiations can proceed before the UK agrees on the basis for a so-called divorce bill.

Last month the Telegraph revealed that officials had drawn up plans to pay up to £36 billion to settle the bill, covering the period up until 2021 – based on  a transition deal in which Britain would offer to continue to make net payments to the EU of some €10bn-a-year for up to three years after Brexit.

But in comments reported by Handelsblatt, a German newspaper, Mr Oettinger said:  “The European Union expects the British to hold commitments. They must fully meet their financial commitments by the end of 2020 and continue to make payments to the EU by 2023.”

Responding to the comments, Mr Redwood said: “There’s no way we are going to go on paying after we have left. That would be completely idiotic. We don’t owe them any contributions after we have left, full stop.”

Gerard Batten, Ukip’s Brexit spokesman, said: “Britain is not legally obliged to pay the EU anything and certainly not until 2023.”
