‘Stranger things have happened’: Trump hopeful for Mideast peace – New York Post

President Trump said Wednesday he was optimistic that peace could be achieved in the Middle East after meeting with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

“We’re looking seriously at peace and maybe ultimately peace in the whole of the Middle East. I think we have a pretty good shot, maybe the best shot ever,” the president said.

“Complex subject, always been considered the toughest deal of all, peace between Israel and the Palestinians, the toughest deal of all. I think we have a very, very good chance. Who knows? Stranger things have happened.”

Trump sounded upbeat but acknowledged that the region had remained volatile for generations.

“From the time I’m a little boy I’ve been hearing about peace in the Middle East. We’re going to see what we can do. There will be no promises,” he said.

“We are fighting very hard, we are trying very hard. If we can do it, it would be a great, great legacy for everybody. So let’s see what happens, good luck everybody, good luck.”

Abbas said through a translator that reaching a peaceful solution would be “the deal of the century.”

“I’m very delighted to be here with President Trump, and I thank you very much. If it is any proof [of] anything, it is to attest to the seriousness of your excellency, Mr. President, to achieve the deal of the century, during this year or in the coming months.’

The Palestinian leader also wished Jews and Muslims a happy holiday.

“Congratulations to the Jewish people on the occasion of Rosh Hashanah and to the Muslim people on the occasion of the new Muslim year,” he said, prompting Trump to respond, “very great sentiment.”
