Waiver Wire Week 9: Jimmy Garoppolo And More Fantasy Football Free-Agent Pickups At Every Position – Forbes

Week 9 is a critical point of the 2017 fantasy football season. Many leagues have a trade deadline approaching and the playoffs are just on the horizon, meaning there isn’t much time to get your lineup in shape for a championship push.

Whether your one of the many fantasy owners who have lost a key contributor to a serious injury or need a bit of extra depth to weather a storm of bye weeks, the waiver wire is the perfect place to patch up your roster or even roll the dice on a potential star. There are a number of intriguing options available in a majority of leagues this week that you can’t afford to miss out on.

Before you put in your claims and bids for Week 9, keep reading for a look at the top players that are likely available in your league. As always, last week’s suggestions can be found here and owned percentage comes courtesy of Yahoo Sports.

Last week’s suggestion: Matt Moore

Jimmy Garoppolo, San Francisco 49ers (2% owned)

The Niners made shockwaves on Monday night, trading a second round pick to the New England Patriots in exchange for Garoppolo. The team now has its quarterback of the future and it’s likely that he’ll get a chance to jump right in and prove his value to a club that has yet to win in 2017.

ESPN Stats & Info tweeted out the career numbers of the fourth-year signal-caller:

Garoppolo saw his most notable action last year, when he started two games at the beginning of the season while starter Tom Brady was serving a four-game suspension. Prior to a shoulder injury that sidelined him for the latter portion of Brady’s punishment, the former Eastern Illinois star threw for 496 yards and four touchdowns with zero interceptions. It may take Garoppolo some time to click in San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan’s offense, so it’s not exactly reasonable to expect these types of sterling performances right off the bat.

This is a situation worth monitoring, but it’s not one you can afford to wait on. Roster Jimmy G immediately, as he’ll be one of the hottest pickups of the week at a position it is near impossible to unearth decent talent at in this portion of the campaign. You can’t slot him in as a starter for your team until the Niners decide to do the same, and even then you’ll want to watch and see how he does at first. If it looks good, Garoppolo could pay dividends in the back half of fantasy the season and deep into the playoffs.

Suggestion: High priority claim for QB-needy owners, 15-25% FAAB bid

Jay Cutler, Miami Dolphins (10% owned)

You know the quarterback position isn’t in the best shape when one of the best free agent adds of the week is someone who didn’t even see action in Week 8. Cutler was sidelined with a rib injury during the embarrassing loss his squad suffered on Thursday Night Football, a game in which second-stringer Matt Moore—last week’s admittedly poor recommendation—tossed two pick sixes against the Ravens and looked downright abysmal running the offense. That performance should eliminate any talk of a quarterback controversy in Miami, as Cutler is clearly the best of the bunch in South Beach.

Patrick Daugherty and Benjamin Allbright had some humorous reactions to Moore’s horrendous showing last week:

Cutler hasn’t been the best fantasy quarterback when healthy, but the 34-year-old did rack up four touchdowns across his last two outings and seemed to be improving before the rib injury. He’s going to suit up and play in Week 9 against the Oakland Raiders, a team that has struggled against the pass at times and allows more than 236 yards per game to opposing signal-callers. That’s a plus matchup for the veteran, so use him in a pinch if you have someone like Tom Brady on bye.

Suggestion: Free agent acquisition after waivers process or 1% FAAB bid
