Sunderland has the slowest housing market in Britain, with more than a quarter of homes unsold six months after the “for sale” sign went up.

An analysis of the pace of sales nationwide has revealed that one in seven properties in the Wearside city have failed to find a buyer for a full year.

The property markets in Liverpool and Bradford are also among the country’s most sluggish. A quarter and a fifth of listings respectively are unsold after six months, according to HouseSimple.

The research confirmed Britain’s north-south divide, with every one of the 10 slowest markets in the north of England or Scotland. Some areas of London also had many properties lingering on the market, however, due to high asking prices, economic uncertainty and stamp duty.
